Doc! My friend got stabbed!

It was a late night shift when a morbidly obese young man was brought by his frantic friends semi awake, they were yelling trying to summon everyone telling them "he was stabbed doc, HURRY!"

as a team we ran, nurses entering IV lines, another doctor and myself cutting off his bloodied clothes to look for a stab wound that we can treat... everything was moving so fast..

the patient held my hand suddenly and stated "I am thirsty", I ignored him and continued my assessment of examining him, doing ultrasounds and checking where the hell the stab wound was!

there was dried blood everywhere on his chest, and we tried our best to clean it off till we found a small whole in the skin above his collar bone!

I was not entirely convinced that this was the only wound and started looking for more.. when the patient suddenly stopped breathing and subsequently lost his pulse...

Everything changed, the focus now was to aggressively resuscitate this man so he won't die (He is actively heading towards the light)... we fail miserably, despite trauma lines, many units of blood given, and an ED thoracotomy. He passed away.

I go home, and I notice his dry thumbprint on my watch when he asked for water...

and I can't help but think- I did not fulfill the wishes of a dying man...
